Air-raid schedules, rolling blackouts and a workforce reorganised around them — how ordinary routines adapted to a fourth year of full-scale war.

The most striking thing about daily life in wartime Ukraine is how much of it looks unremarkable. Cafés open, children take exams, trams run on schedule. The war is present less as interruption than as a layer of logistics laid over everything else.

## The grid decides the day

Strikes on generation and transmission capacity turned electricity into the organising constraint of the working day. Households learned their district's outage schedule the way they once learned tram timetables. Businesses that could afford generators became informal public infrastructure: the café with power becomes the neighbourhood office.

## Work reorganised

Remote work, already normalised by the pandemic, absorbed much of the shock. The IT sector kept exporting throughout. Elsewhere the labour market has been reshaped by mobilisation and by the departure of several million people, mostly women and children, leaving acute shortages in healthcare, transport and construction.

## What the numbers miss

Aggregate indicators capture the loss of output but not its distribution. Frontline oblasts and the rest of the country now differ more from each other than Ukraine as a whole differs from its neighbours.
